Freelance Community Engagement Coordinator

Part time: 7 hours per week (flexible)

Contract: freelance fixed term 45 weeks, with possibility of extension

Salary: £14-17 per hour (based on experience)

Location: hybrid - home working or office, with occasional evening and Sunday work

About us:

 

Chabad-Lubavitch of Islington is a small charity supporting the Jewish community of the London Borough of Islington. We deliver social and religious events, educational classes, groups, community support, and synagogue services at our community centre near Angel.

 

We also promote community cohesion and educate about Jewish culture through our school talks, walking tours and large-scale public events, such as the Islington Menorah Lighting and the Big Jewish Summer Fete.

 

About the role:

 

The Community Engagement Coordinator will deliver our community engagement work, focusing on developing our volunteering programme, organising community events, managing social media and community newsletter, creating partnerships with local schools, and assisting the Community Advisory Board.

 

You will be confident, organised and able to work independently and as part of a team. You should have experience of managing volunteers, small-scale events and project management, strong communication skills and be able to build effective relationships.

 

This will be a varied and interesting role for someone who is looking for a flexible part-time job to suit around other responsibilities. As this is a freelance contract, the postholder will be responsible for monthly invoicing and tax returns/National Insurance contributions.

 

Duties:

 

  • Manage our volunteering programme, including recruitment and training of new volunteers, developing new volunteering opportunities and supporting existing volunteers.

  • Organise small community social events, including planning, liaising with stakeholders, marketing and website updates, and setting up the venue.

  • Assist Events Manager with planning and management of large-scale events.

  • Assist the Community Advisory Board, including scheduling meetings, creating agenda, taking notes and actions, and circulating the minutes.

  • Manage social media engagement, including Facebook and Twitter.

  • Create a community newsletter and update the website.

  • Create partnerships with local schools to deliver our school talks.

  • Assist Chief Executive with administrative tasks as required.

 

Person specification:

 

Experience:

  • Events and project management experience.

  • Experience of community engagement.

  • Experience of managing and working with volunteers.

  • Desirable: Experience of using social media in a community engagement role.

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships.

  • Confidence to engage directly with a wide range of people face to face.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong IT skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, Google Drive.

  • Strong social media skills, including Facebook and Twitter.

  • Good organisational and administrative skills.

  • Ability to prioritise effectively, multitask and work to deadlines in a busy environment. 

  • Ability to plan simple budgets.

  • Good writing skills with the ability to write web copy, newsletter and use professional tone in written communications.

  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings or Sundays.

  • Registered (or willing to register) as self-employed and responsible for their tax returns and National Insurance contributions.
