The Torah Scroll is the most sacred item in a synagogue. The last time there was a brand new Torah inauguration in Islington was quite likely over 100 years ago.
The dedication of a new Torah scroll is traditionally celebrated with great festivity. The source of this custom is the biblical account of King David welcoming the Holy Ark into his capital: “David went and brought up the Ark of G‑d . . . into the City of David, with joy . . . David danced with all his might before G‑d . . . David and all the House of Israel brought up the Ark of G‑d with shouts and with the sound of the shofar [ram’s horn].”
The Torah is dedicated in memory of Julian Young who was devoted to his Jewish faith. He was an internationally known lawyer with attitude, supporter of human rights and passionate Arsenal…
