JLI Course: Great Debates in Jewish History

great-debates.jpg

Debate and disputation are not only encouraged within Judaism but reside at the very heart of Jewish history and theology. The Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) presents Great Debates in Jewish History, a six-session course exploring six fundamental conflicts that pit the greatest Jewish minds against each other - six instances of vastly divergent perspectives from throughout our history, including several that remain questions for us today.

Course starts on 1 November (and you can choose from lunchtime or evening sessions!) Please follow this link to find out more and book your place.

Children's Alef Club

We are pleased to announce the growth of our Alef Club into a weekly activity thanks to the new generations of little toddlers graduating our Babyccino program.

The weekly club will meet on Sunday mornings 10-12am, where children will be led on a discovery of their Jewish heritage through creative activities such as music, storytelling, crafting and much more.

Come visit us on 17 September to find out more!
We will be hosting the Shofar factory, an interactive workshop on how shofars are made. You will be able to find out more about the learning activities planned for the year, but most importantly, this opportunity will allow you to provide feedback on your interest and goals for your children’s education.

Walking History Tour

During the 18th and 19th centuries Islington had one of the largest Jewish populations in England. We offer a walk and talk about the wide range of characters, where they came from, where they lived, where they worshipped, and what happened to them. A rich cast of politicians, founders of business empires, inventors, mathematicians, artists, architects, writers, eccentrics, and villains is promised – not forgetting the many people with more ordinary lives who made up the community.

SoulMates

Jewish Secrets to Meaningful Relationships

Romantics of all ages have waxed poetic on the notion of “soulmates,” seeking to grasp what makes love and passion so potent, what drives the inexplicable magnetism between two people, and what makes true love last. Yet millennia of Jewish text and tradition are rich with insights on this very topic, from the mystical and spiritual to the no-nonsense and practical. Whether you are currently married, considering someday tying the knot, or simply seek to better understand the spiritual root of love and marriage, Soulmates is a seven-session course drawing on timeless Jewish wisdom that will forever change how you think about the important relationship in your life, in all its beauty and complexity.

Religious Tolerance: Jewish Faith Discovery Sessions

We are pleased to offer the 'Jewish Faith Discovery Session' to all schools in Islington. This session can be run as an end of term class discussion to Jewish studies in Religious Education. Alternatively, it can be run during an assembly. During this visit, students get an overview of Jewish practice, but more importantly they are able to ask any questions about the life of Jewish people. This valuable time raises awareness and allows better understanding of other faiths, in effect leading to more open minded and tolerant views of people with different lifestyles.

Some of the schools we have visited: Highbury Grove School, Prior Weston Primary School, St Andrew's Primary School, Clerkenwell Parochial Primary School.

Interested in us coming to your child's school? Are you a teacher and would like us to run a session? Please do not hesitate to contact us.

Rowan Arts - A Young Persons Guide To Religion

Young people aged 15-25 directed, filmed and edited ‘Questions of Faith: Exploring Religion in Islington’ over a period of six months. They interviewed religious leaders and young people around the borough to uncover the heritage of religious groups and explore the issues around faith that they, as young people, found to be relevant today.

Chabad of Islington is included in the video (from the 8th minute). Enjoy!
